In the summer semester 2019/2020, the Jan Masaryk Centre for International Studies has the opportunity to welcome for the first time one of the world’s leading experts on public diplomacy, Professor Eytan Gilboa. Professor Gilboa (PhD Harvard University) is Professor of International Communication, Director of the Center for International Communication, Senior Research Associate, at the BESA Center for Strategic Studies, Bar-Ilan University; and Senior Fellow, at the Center on Public Diplomacy, University of Southern California.

Professor Gilboa is a world-renowned expert in the field of international communication, diplomacy and public diplomacy. He is also the author of several monographs and numerous articles and chapters in expert publications.

Professor Gilboa, in the position of a visiting professor, will teach a new intensive course 2SM454 – Global Issues and Public Diplomacy.

From the syllabus:

“Public Diplomacy (PD) is now an essential dimension of world affairs.  Increasingly, PD is not just the province of the nation state but is a tool used by many actors in the international sphere. Moreover, the message is not just focused on endorsing an actor but increasingly takes the form of an attempt to promulgate an idea or an approach to a global issue. An ideas-based PD is emerging. This course is born of that ideas-based approach.  It will focus on critical global issues or challenges and PD instruments that may help to deal with them.”

The course will be taught in English from 4th to 7th May 2020. Class time will be divided into presentation, discussion and seminars.
