PhD (four-year)

The aim of the doctoral program in International and Diplomatic Studies is to extend knowledge, competencies, and skills required for independent research in this field. Emphasis is placed on developing scholarly expertise, including in-depth knowledge of International Relations theories, methodologies, and research techniques. The program also fosters a comprehensive understanding of contemporary international relations and diplomacy, and provides an analytical toolkit for the interdisciplinary study of globalization processes.

This doctoral program aims to produce outstanding specialists in International Relations. It is designed to offer students advanced interdisciplinary knowledge across various branches of international relations (politics, economics, international law, security, culture, and the environment) at both theoretical and empirical levels, which is essential for their research.

Upon successful completion of the doctoral degree, graduates will understand the principles of scholarly work, ethics, and research design. They will be familiar with research methodologies and will gain the ability to propose new methodological approaches and apply them in individual research tasks. Additionally, graduates will acquire the competencies and skills necessary for independent creative scholarly work and research, culminating in the completion and successful defense of their doctoral thesis.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of International Relations, special attention is paid to understanding the interplay between theory and practice, interdisciplinarity, and developing skills for interdisciplinary analysis. The core of the program focuses on international politics, diplomacy, and economics, while also considering other aspects of contemporary international relations such as law, culture, and the environment.

The program is designed primarily for graduates in social sciences (including economics) and humanities. It is suitable for candidates motivated to work in academia, capable of abstract theoretical thinking, and possessing a comprehensive and systematic approach to theoretical and empirical problems. Candidates should be adept at identifying gaps in current knowledge and addressing them by formulating new research questions, designing research, and utilizing relevant research methodologies. An excellent command of English is required, and advanced knowledge of other languages, especially those of specific countries the candidate intends to research, is recommended.

The program educates young scholars in both general and applied research fields, preparing graduates for successful careers in academic and research institutions, as well as in foreign service. Graduates will also be qualified for careers in management, leadership of international projects, and as experts and analysts in international institutions. Additionally, graduates may choose to become specialists in internationalized companies or work in the media.
